WHO WE ARE
We welcome you to the Religious Education Program of Saint Gregory the Great Parish. The ultimate mission of our program is to help our children and young adults encounter and fall in love with the reality and truth of Jesus Christ and His Church. Through the power, grace and inspiration of the Holy Spirit we strive to lead our children into a life of prayer, communion, and missionary zeal that shows itself profoundly in how we live our life and treat those around us. It is our desire to nurture all students with the truth and richness of our Catholic faith by plunging into the depths of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. We are excited and humbled to be able to walk together with you and your family in this adventure towards the depths of God and His Church.
Necessity of Religious Education
Why do parishes offer Religious Education and for what purpose?
A common misconception of Religious Education is that its sole purpose is to help children receive sacraments. Although the reception of sacraments is essential to the Christian life and highlights the many stages of our journey through our formal Religious Formation; the Religious Education Program has at its purpose a more holistic end.
In a world whose culture is at best indifferent and at worse hostile to the faith, there has never been a time when proper and profound formation has been so crucial. Understanding that our youth are constantly being exposed to ideas and teachings that go intrinsically against the truths and teachings of Jesus Christ, Religious Educations goal is to help the children of our parish who do not attend a Catholic School, receive a rich and profound Catholic formation that will help them not only discover the richness and truth of the Catholic faith, but will also give them the tools to help them live and share their faith fruitfully and efficiently.
With this in mind, Religious Education was created to assist parents in the Catholic formation of their children. As a Systematic Catechetical program, Religious Education was established to accompany a child as their formal religion class from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Although ideally, children should begin Religious Education in Kindergarten and continue until 8th grade, many children begin their formation at different stages and the program is equipped to help students who begin late.
The Sacrament of Baptism
*For all children who are 7 years of age and older.
The Baptism Preparation Course has as its main objective, to provide fundamental understanding and formation for all unbaptized children (catechumens) who have reached the canonical age of reason (7 years of age). This course will journey with the child and parents from the pre-baptismal classes until the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism. In these classes we will unwrap and discover the beauty and power of the Sacrament of Baptism in dynamic and interactive way. All children seven and over are required to attend with their parents.
*For children under 7 years of age.
Children under seven are not required to attend Baptism Preparation classes. Please call or stop by the Rectory office for more information.
The Sacraments of First Reconciliation/First Holy Communion
Preparation for the reception of the Sacrament s of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion is a two year process for all validly Baptized Catholics. Ordinarily, this process begins in first grade and culminates at the end of second grade (when the child has reached the age of 7). For children who are entering the Religious Education Program at a later age, there are classes designated for older children who are missing the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion which also follow a two year process.
The Sacrament of Confirmation
Preparation for the Conferral of Confirmation is a two year process for all Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. Ordinarily, this process begins in seventh grade and culminates at the end of eighth grade. For teenagers entering at a later age, we offer a two year high school Confirmation program. Confirmation candidates over the age of 18 are invited to join our RCIA program.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a 7 to 8 month journey for adults who have not received the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, (Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Its goal is to help form a community of inquirers, sponsors and guides who unravel and plunge deeper into the depths of Catholicism, through evangelization and formal catechetical instruction firmly rooted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Those Catechumens(unbaptized), baptized but un-catechized and those seeking full Communion into the Catholic Church come together on a weekly basis to learn about the scriptures and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church while discovering Gods presence and movement in their lives.
Adults in the RCIA program meet on Sundays and receive their Sacraments on the Easter Vigil.
